Diabetology

As we may be aware, diabetes also known as diabetes mellitus (DM), is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period.

There are 2 types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2.

Type 1

The 1st one known as hypoglycemia is where the person’s body doesn’t produce any amount of insulin or it's very less as compared to the body needs.

Type 2

The 2nd one also known as hyperglycemia, is the most common form. Here, the body may or may not produce adequate insulin, but the body doesn’t use it effectively, this is known as insulin resistance.

Cause

India will become the diabetes capital by 2050.

This will be true if we don’t take action now, the abdominal and lower limb obesity and metabolic syndrome need to be controlled as soon as possible.

Being overweight or obese increases your chances of getting hyperglycemia. The next question will be how and why. Being overweight stresses the insides of the individual’s cells. When a person eats more, the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) (inside cells) has to process more. When the ER stresses itself by doing more than it can handle, it sends out a signal to the cell to dampen the insulin receptors on the cell surface. This results in insulin resistance and to remarkably high concentration of sugar and glucose in the blood, and this is an obvious sign of diabetes.
